Brokeback Mountain

About The Show

The world premiere of Brokeback Mountain, a new play with music, written by Ashley Robinson with songs by Dan Gillespie Sells and based on Annie Proulx’s short story. Directed by Jonathan Butterell, Brokeback Mountain stars Mike Faist as Jack and Lucas Hedges as Ennis, both making their West End stage debuts. The production sees Jonathan Butterell and Dan Gillespie Sells (The Feeling), creators of the hit musical and film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, reuniting with Producer Nica Burns.

Wyoming 1963: a wild landscape where people live in extreme rural poverty in tight, insular and conservative communities. When Ennis and Jack take jobs on the isolated Brokeback Mountain, all their certainties of life change forever as they flounder in unexpected emotional waters of increasing depth. Dan Gillespie Sells’ beautiful Country and Western songs weave heartbreakingly through this intense tale of an irresistible and hidden love spanning twenty years and its tragic consequences.

This is a play with original music by Dan Gillespie Sells, performed by the extraordinary singer, Eddi Reader, joined by her onstage Country and Western band: Sean Green (piano/Musical Director), Meelie Traill (upright bass), Greg Miller (harmonica) and BJ Cole (pedal steel guitar).

Annie Proulx said: “Brokeback Mountain has been recreated in several different forms, each with its own distinctive moods and impact. Ashley’s script is fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments.”

Ashley Robinson said: “I’m honoured to be entrusted by Annie Proulx to bring new life in new form to her timeless and universal story. A story that means so much to so many, and will surely mean as much to a whole new generation.

Dan Gillespie Sells’ powerful and beautiful songs, sung by “The Balladeer,” give voice to the tumultuous inner landscape of our wannabe cowboys (both young men of few words), and provide the scope of our vast and brutal outer landscape, not to mention allowing Proulx’s poetic prose to literally sing.

Grateful as all hell to reunite with Jonathan Butterell and to put this piece in his skilled and sensitive hands—what lucky actors, what a lucky team, and what a lucky production, all coming together under Nica Burns, in her marvel of a new space, @sohoplace. Let’s ride.”

Jonathan Butterell said: “When Ashley approached us about collaborating on Brokeback Mountain we were struck immediately by his deep connection to the world and community that Annie has so brilliantly written about over the years. He brought to the adaptation an authenticity and an understanding of these working class men, scraping to survive the harsh brutality of their environment and the insularity of thinking surrounding them, which ultimately leads to their tragedy.”

Dan Gillespie Sells said: “I have loved working on this project with Ashley and Jonathan. The material and this complex story is inspiring to compose for. I’ve really enjoyed reconnecting with a genre of music I grew up with and using it to serve the drama of each moment. Plus I get to work with some legendary artists which is such an honour and a joy.”

Nica Burns, Producer, said: “I am excited that our fourth production @sohoplace, Brokeback Mountain, is our first world premiere. In the intimate, intense auditorium that is @sohoplace, our production concentrates on the relationship between our two lead characters with Eddi Reader’s memorable voice adding to the heartbreak as the soundtrack of their lives. To have Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges, two outstanding young American actors playing Jack and Ennis is a real coup. We are thrilled.”

Our Official Hotel Partner is The Londoner.

Eddi Reader

Balladeer

Celebrating over 40 years as a live performer, Eddi Reader has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. What sets Eddi apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance and ability to not only move the listener, but connect her experience to that of her audience. No two performances are ever the same.

Though first brought into the limelight as front woman for Fairground Attractionwho’s #1 single, Perfect and parent album, First of a Million Kisses, both topped the U.K. charts and the charts in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan,  it was Eddi’s subsequent solo albums that signalled her ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them very much her own. Notably, The Songs of Robert Burns(2003) is a timeless interpretation showcasing the poems of Scotland’s national bard and gained her Five honorary degrees from Strathclyde University, Caledonia University, Stirling university, Edinburgh university and Paisley University.

Plus an MBE for outstanding contributions to the Arts.

Eddi has explored the acting profession before, through her acclaimed performances as Jolene Jowett in John Byrnes “Your Cheatin Heart” (BBC Scotland production starring Tilda Swinton), a 1937 jazz singer in Richard Linklaters movie: “Me and Orson Welles”, (starring Zac Efron) and in her contribution as “Joy 3” in Michael Boyd’s production of Janice Galloway’s “The Trick Is To Keep Breathing”. (Radio Four and a Tron theatre production also starting Siobhan Redmond and Jenny Black).

With her work in song, from the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi Reader extinguishes the preordained boundaries of genre, bringing joyous life to all forms. Her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism combine with an astute and pragmatic nature to make her a unique and powerful figure in contemporary music. With 10 critically acclaimed solo albums, and awards in tow, Eddi continues to delight audiences worldwide. 2022 proved to be one of her busiest touring years yet, playing sell out shows as part of her ‘40 Years Live Tour’ in addition to appearing as special guest with theJools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra for an extensive UK tour.

BJ Cole

Pedal Steel Guitar

BJ Cole’s uniquely eclectic style of Pedal Steel Guitar playing first made an impact on the British music scene in the early 1970’s with his major contribution to Elton John’s classic ‘Tiny Dancer’, and Joan Armatrading’s ‘Down To Zero’.

Throughout the ’70’s and into the ’80’s, BJ’s inimitable Pedal Steel work on classic recordings by Gerry Rafferty, Steve Marriott, Scott Walker, The Stranglers, Deacon Blue, and Michael Chapman earned him considerable respect as both an innovative and exciting creative force.

During the 1980’s and ’90’s, BJ’s desire to pioneer the use of the Pedal Steel Guitar far beyond its traditional context in country music has ensured that he has continued to expand the instrument’s sonic horizons and played a large part in its acceptance as a unique voice in the popular music of the time.

The success of this pioneering approach has been born out through his ongoing session work and collaborations with artists as diverse as David Sylvian, Depeche Mode, Beck, Bjork, Sting, John Cale, The Verve, Tom Jones and more recently, with Matt Berry, the avant garde rock band Black Midi and the Australian experimental composer Oren Ambarchi.

His explorations have also seen the release of a string of solo and collaborative recordings – ‘The New Hovering Dog’ ( United Artists 1972). ‘Transparent Music’ (1989), ‘Heart Of The Moment’ (1995), ‘Stop The Panic’ (with DJ Luke Vibert, 2000), ‘Trouble In Paradise’ (2004), ‘Into The Blue’, ( with cellist Emily Burridge, 2006) and ‘Lush Life’ (with Roger Beaujolais and Simon Thorpe, 2009). Making these records has enabled BJ to establish his own artistic profile, and has opened up avenues to new collaborations and to composing for film and TV.

BJ & Emily Burridge are well established as a live duo. In their concerts they feature their unique interpretations of music by Aaron Copland, Erik Satie and Claude Debussy.

Never content to stand still, BJ now makes his unique sound palette available to recording artists, songwriters and record producers via his ‘Online Overdub Service’, at his website, www.bjcole.co.uk
